What is AEO? Answer engine optimization explained
Answer
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of shaping a page so an engine can lift it as the direct answer to a question. The engines include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Google's featured snippets. Google's featured snippets guide, last updated Dec. 10, 2025, says you can't mark a page as a featured snippet, so AEO works through how the page is written.
What AEO means in plain terms
An answer engine is a search tool that replies to a question instead of only listing links. Some pull one passage from one page. Others write a new reply from several pages and name the sources.
AEO is the work of making your page the passage they pull. A buyer asks "how long does a crypto exchange audit take?" The engine finds one page that answers it in two plain sentences. That page gets quoted. A page that circles the question for six paragraphs does not.
It comes down to three things:
- A page the engine can crawl and index.
- An answer it can lift without rewriting.
- A source and date it can trust.
You also need a way to check the result, since each AI answer is written fresh. We cover that below.
Where AEO shows up
AEO applies in three places, and the same page work serves all of them:
- Featured snippets. Google describes them as "special boxes where the format of a regular search result is reversed." Google's systems pick the page. You can't tag one yourself.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google writes a summary and links to pages.
- ChatGPT and Perplexity. Each searches the web, then writes a cited reply.
The reason to care is the click. Pew Research Center tracked "the web browsing data of 900 U.S. adults" in March 2025. It reported: "Some 18% of all the Google searches in our study generated an AI summary as part of the search results." Users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with a summary and 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits with a summary. When the answer sits on the results page, being the quoted source is the part you can still win.
AEO vs SEO
SEO gets a page crawled, indexed and ranked. AEO shapes the page so a passage from it can stand as the answer. SEO competes at the level of the whole page. AEO competes at the level of one passage that answers one question.
AEO sits on top of SEO. Google's AI features guide, last updated Dec. 10, 2025, says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page that is not indexed has no AEO to do.

AEO vs GEO
The two names cover overlapping work. AEO points at the direct answer, including featured snippets. GEO points at being named and cited inside a full AI reply. The page work is close to the same: lead with the answer, source each figure, keep one question per page.
GEO has a named academic source and its own measurement problems. We cover both in What is GEO? Read that guide for the origin of the term and how an AI engine builds an answer.
Best practices for answer engine optimization
- Answer in the first two sentences. Write them so they read correctly if an engine quotes only them. Put the question in the heading.
- Keep one question per page. A page that tries to answer five questions gives an engine nothing clean to lift.
- Give each figure its source and date in the same sentence. Quote the source word for word when you use quote marks.
- Let the crawlers in. OpenAI's crawler page says "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Perplexity's page says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Our free AI crawler check shows which crawlers your site blocks.
- Skip the tricks. Google's guide says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." It adds: "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Engines read third-party pages too. Find the sites they already cite for your topic.
What to expect from answer engine optimization services
People who search for "answer engine optimization services" are asking what they would pay for. Here is the work, in the order it should happen:
- A fixed list of the questions your buyers ask AI engines, with what each engine says today.
- A crawl and indexing check, so engines can reach your pages.
- Pages rewritten or written to answer one question each, with sourced figures.
- Work on the third-party sites engines already cite for your topic.
- A repeated measurement against the same questions, by engine.
Ask any provider how they measure. If the answer is a single run of a few prompts, the result may not hold, because AI answers can change from run to run. Our own service is described on AI SEO for crypto, fintech and AI companies.
What Intrica's own data shows
Two things only we have published. Each links to its source.
ChatGPT leans on the brand's own site
We asked four AI engines whether 13 crypto exchanges are safe, Aug. 11 to 21, 2026, with 5 runs per prompt. 52.1% of ChatGPT's sources (359 of 689, Aug. 21 run) were the exchange's own site. On Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews the share was 8.2% to 10.2%. Engines differ a lot in where they look, so one GEO plan does not fit all of them. See the exchange safety study.
A fixed method for AI answers
We fix the buyer questions first, run each engine on its own, repeat every question several times, count a miss as a miss, check each finding by hand and report always, usually, sometimes or never named. Read the steps in how we measure AI answers.
How to measure AEO
A ranking report will not show whether an engine quotes you. We use Answer Share: out of the buyer questions you care about, how many name you, on each engine. The free Answer Share checker asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode up to three of your questions and shows who gets named and cited instead. Cited and named are counted apart, because an engine can use your page without naming you.
Run it before you change a page and again after. One run proves little, so repeat it.

Frequently asked questions
What is AEO in marketing?
It is the work of writing and structuring pages so search and AI engines quote them as the direct answer to a question. It covers featured snippets and AI answers.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
The two overlap and the page work is close to the same. AEO aims at the direct answer. GEO aims at a brand named inside a full AI reply. What is GEO? has the detail.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO gets a page crawled, indexed and ranked. AEO shapes a passage on that page so it can be quoted as the answer. AEO vs SEO has the detail.
What are AEO best practices?
Answer the question in the first two sentences, keep one question per page, source and date each figure, let AI crawlers in, and earn mentions on sites engines already cite.
