What is an AI wrapper?
Answer
An AI wrapper is a product built on another company's AI model, reached through that company's API, with its own interface, prompts and workflow on top. Andrew Chen, writing on Feb. 4, 2025, summarized the common view of such apps as commoditized UI on top of more powerful models, and argued that distribution and network effects decide which ones last.
How a wrapper works
The wrapper sends a user's input to a model provider's API with its own instructions and context, then returns the result inside its own product. The provider runs the model. The wrapper owns the customer relationship, the workflow and the data around each request.
The provider's data terms flow through to the wrapper's customers. Data sent to the OpenAI API has not been used for training since March 1, 2023 unless the customer opts in, per OpenAI's API data controls page checked Oct. 28, 2026. Retained Claude API data is never used for training without express permission, per Anthropic's API docs checked Oct. 28, 2026.
What a wrapper depends on
- Model availability. OpenAI gives at least 6 months' notice before retiring a generally available model, per its deprecations page checked Oct. 28, 2026, and it shut down gpt-5-codex on July 23, 2026.
- Token prices and usage terms, which the model provider sets and can change.
- Output quality, which changes when the provider updates or replaces a model.
- Competitors, who can call the same model through the same API.
Where a wrapper builds an edge
- Network effects, which Chen's Feb. 4, 2025 essay names as the main defense for consumer products.
- Deep workflow, compliance and security work for business buyers, which the same essay lists as defenses that still apply.
- Proprietary data that a rival can't get by calling the same API.
- A brand that buyers and AI engines name when someone asks about the category.
Check whether AI engines know your product as its own company or describe it as a feature of the model it runs on.
