How do you track AI visibility?
Answer
You track AI visibility by running a fixed set of buyer questions on each AI engine, several times each, and recording how often your brand is named or cited. Repeat runs matter because SparkToro's study, published Jan. 28, 2026, found under a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returns the same brand list twice. Track the rate per engine over time.
What to measure
- Mention rate, the share of runs in which each engine names your brand.
- Citations, the runs in which an engine links to one of your pages.
- The sites each engine cites instead of you on the same questions.
- Visits from AI engines. Google's AI features guide, updated Dec. 10, 2025, says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report.
How to set it up
- Write the questions your buyers ask before they choose a vendor, and freeze the set so each week compares with the last.
- Run every question on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and keep each engine's results apart.
- Run each question several times per engine. SparkToro's study found the same brands in the same order about once in 1,000 runs.
- Record whether you were named, whether you were cited and which sources appeared.
- Report each engine's rate over time, and drop runs that failed or skipped web search.
What tools cost
- Ahrefs' pricing page, checked Oct. 28, 2026, sells custom prompt packages from $50 a month for 2,500 checks, where one prompt on one platform in one location is one check.
- Profound's pricing page, checked Oct. 28, 2026, offers a free 7 day trial of 50 prompts a day on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
- A spreadsheet and manual runs work for a small question set, at the cost of staff time.
How Intrica measures AI answers
Intrica fixes the buyer questions with each client before the first run. Each engine is run and reported on its own. Every question runs more than once on each engine. Results go into plain buckets per engine.
