How do you choose a crypto marketing agency?
Answer
Choose a crypto marketing agency that knows the promotion rules in every market you sell to and reports results you can check in your own analytics. On Oct. 3, 2022, the SEC said Kim Kardashian agreed to pay about $1.26 million for promoting a crypto asset security on Instagram without disclosing the $250,000 she was paid. Ask each agency how it keeps your campaigns inside those rules.
Rules a crypto agency should know
- United States. The FTC's Endorsement Guides, revised in 2023, say a paid endorsement must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, and the FTC says handing promotion to an outside company does not relieve you of responsibility (FTC guidance page, checked Oct. 28, 2026).
- United Kingdom. Firms marketing cryptoassets to UK consumers have had to follow the FCA's financial promotion rules since Oct. 8, 2023, and a promotion must come from or be approved by an FCA authorised firm, come from a firm registered under the Money Laundering Regulations, or meet an exemption (FCA page, last updated Feb. 6, 2026).
- Paid search. Google's cryptocurrency ads policy, checked Oct. 28, 2026, lets exchanges and software wallets advertise only in listed countries, and only when Google has certified them and they hold the licence each country requires.
- Influencers. The Kardashian case came from one Instagram post. Ask how the agency briefs paid creators and checks their disclosures.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Ask for campaigns the team ran itself, and ask to speak with one of those clients.
- Ask which numbers they will report each month and where each number comes from. Sign-ups and traffic from your own analytics are easier to check than follower counts.
- Ask who reviews copy for legal risk in each market before it goes live.
- Ask how they track whether AI engines name your company, and whether they check ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews one by one.
- Ask what you keep if you part ways. Content, ad accounts and analytics should sit in accounts you own.
Signs of a careful agency
- It asks about your licences and target markets on the first call.
- It puts a clear paid disclosure on every sponsored post.
- It writes down scope, deliverables and reporting before you pay.
- It tells you up front that rankings, AI citations and token prices are outside anyone's control.
