What is a payfac?
Answer
A payfac, or payment facilitator, is a company that lets other businesses accept card payments as sub-merchants under its own master merchant account, through a sponsoring acquiring bank. Stripe's payfac guide, checked Oct. 28, 2026, says a traditional payfac registers with each card network in each country and pays initial fees of $5,000 each to Visa and Mastercard.
How it works
The payfac signs with an acquiring bank and registers a master merchant ID. Each business it onboards gets a sub-merchant ID under that master account.
Sub-merchants skip opening their own merchant account. The payfac handles onboarding and underwriting.
Stripe's guide, checked Oct. 28, 2026, offers its own payfac solution as the alternative. The platform embeds payments and Stripe carries the setup and network work.
What a payfac takes on
- Underwriting policies so only lawful businesses are onboarded.
- Know Your Customer checks on every sub-merchant.
- Anti money laundering rules from card networks and regulators.
- PCI compliance for the platform.
- Reserves on sub-merchants to cover credit risk.
Payfac or partner with one
- Count the cost. Stripe's guide, checked Oct. 28, 2026, estimates $500,000 or more for underwriting policies and $200,000 or more a year for PCI validation.
- Count the time. The same guide estimates three to six months to set up an acquirer partnership.
- Compare that with embedding an existing payfac, where the provider carries the network registration.
- Decide who owns disputes. Stripe's merchant of record guide, updated June 10, 2026, says under a payfac the sub-merchant stays legally responsible for the sale.
