Does schema markup help AI citations?

By Ben Tabas, Intrica Research · Updated

Answer

Schema markup did not raise AI citations in Ahrefs' test, published May 11, 2026. Across 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD, ChatGPT citations rose 2.2% and Google AI Mode 2.4%, both statistically indistinguishable from zero, while AI Overviews fell 4.6%, all against 4,000 control pages. Google says "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

How the test worked

  • Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema between August 2025 and March 2026 and matched them against 4,000 control pages.
  • It compared the 30 days before and the 30 days after each page added schema.
  • Ahrefs concludes: "Adding schema didn't boost citations on any platform." It calls the AI Overviews drop small but statistically significant, and says it is not clearly attributable to schema.

What Google says

Google's AI features guide, updated Dec. 10, 2025, lists "Making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page" among its best practices. Schema that contradicts the page is a risk.

The same guide says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special schema.org structured data.

Where to spend the time instead

  1. Put each answer in plain text on the page, with the first two sentences able to stand alone.
  2. Keep any schema you already run matched to what the page says.
  3. Allow the search crawlers and check your firewall.
  4. Measure citations with repeated runs of the same questions before and after a change.

See whether AI can quote your page as written, with or without schema.
