Do AI crawlers render JavaScript?
Answer
Vercel's analysis of crawler traffic, published Dec. 17, 2024, found "none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript," naming crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, ByteDance and Perplexity. The same analysis says Gemini uses Googlebot's infrastructure, so it renders JavaScript. Put facts you want quoted in the HTML the server sends.
What each source says
- Vercel's list of crawlers that did not render JavaScript includes OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. It studied nearly 1 billion monthly requests from AI crawlers.
- Google's JavaScript guide, updated March 4, 2026, says Googlebot queues pages for rendering and that "a headless Chromium renders the page and executes the JavaScript." Google also uses the rendered HTML to index the page.
- OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler pages, checked Oct. 29, 2026, do not say whether their crawlers render JavaScript.
What the gap means
Vercel's study is from Dec. 2024 and the vendor pages are silent, so no current source confirms a change. A page whose price or answer appears only after scripts run may be readable to Google and blank to other crawlers.
How to check your page
- Request the page with curl or open View Source, not the browser inspector.
- Search that raw HTML for the answer, the price and the product name.
- Move any missing facts into server rendered or static HTML.
- Recheck after each release, since a front end change can hide text again.
See whether AI engines can reach and read your page without running JavaScript.
